Originally from the South and leading quite a nomadic life, I
settled in Warwickshire some 23 years ago and think of it as
home.
Art in one form or another has always been a part of my life,
choosing to pick up a pencil and sketch rather than apply my
mind to the mathematical problem needing to be solved before
school the next morning. The need to be creative never far away.
Later in life being able to take advantage of a little more time I
did four years of Creative Embroidery City & Guilds, introducing
me to the colours of fabrics, threads, wools, so many textures,
so many avenues to go down! Now, I am exploring the delights
of drawing and painting with fabrics, papers, threads, silks, dyes
and of course stitch.
My inspiration – look around you – foliage, horizons, glorious architecture and so much more.
My pieces are very often a rough idea on paper, then I think of the colours I would like to use, the
next step is to look at the fabrics – generally silks, velvets, sheers – and then the work begins.
The sewing machine has now become more of a drawing implement than a means of holding
fabrics together. When things go together well and I can stand back from a piece and feel satisfied,
it is a great feeling.
